Keukenhof & Delft Information
Keukenhof: The Garden of Europe
Keukenhof, often called “The Garden of Europe,” is one of the world’s most famous and largest flower gardens, located in Lisse, Netherlands. Covering approximately 32 hectares (79 acres), Keukenhof is a breathtaking display of floral artistry, featuring over 7 million flower bulbs planted annually.
History & Background
The history of Keukenhof dates back to the 15th century when it was originally the hunting grounds and herb garden (hence the name “Keukenhof,” meaning “kitchen garden”) for the castle of Jacoba van Beieren (Jacqueline of Bavaria). In 1949, a group of flower growers and exporters turned it into a spring flower exhibition to promote the Dutch flower industry, particularly tulips, which have been synonymous with the Netherlands for centuries.
Attractions & Features
Tulip Fields – The park’s most famous feature is its stunning variety of tulips in different colors, shapes, and patterns, arranged in intricate designs.
Flower Pavilions – Several pavilions, including the Willem-Alexander Pavilion and the Oranje Nassau Pavilion, showcase themed floral exhibitions featuring not only tulips but also orchids, daffodils, roses, and hyacinths.
Themed Gardens – Keukenhof offers a variety of themed gardens, such as the Japanese Garden, the Natural Garden, and the Historical Garden, each offering a unique horticultural experience.
Windmill & Canals – A traditional Dutch windmill stands inside the park, offering panoramic views of the surrounding tulip fields. Visitors can also take whisper boat tours through the canals for a peaceful ride among the flowers.
Floral Sculptures & Art – Each year, Keukenhof adopts a new theme, reflected in flower mosaics and sculptures created from thousands of blossoms.
Best Time to Visit
Keukenhof is open only during the spring season, typically from mid-March to mid-May, with April being the peak bloom time when the tulips are at their most vibrant.
Delft: The City of Blue Porcelain & Dutch Masters
Delft is a picturesque historic city in South Holland, renowned for its Delftware (Delft Blue pottery), canals, and its association with the famous painter Johannes Vermeer. It combines medieval charm with a vibrant student atmosphere, thanks to Delft University of Technology (TU Delft).
Historical Significance
Founded in the 13th century, Delft quickly grew into a major trading and cultural centre. It played a significant role in Dutch history as the home of William of Orange (William the Silent), the founder of the Dutch Republic, who was assassinated in Delft’s Prinsenhof Museum in 1584.
Top Attractions & Highlights
Market Square – The heart of Delft, lined with cafes, restaurants, and historic buildings, including the impressive City Hall and Nieuwe Kerk (New Church).
Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) – A 15th-century Gothic church housing the Royal Mausoleum, where members of the Dutch royal family, including William of Orange, are buried. The church’s tower offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
Oude Kerk (Old Church) – A leaning medieval church known for its tilted tower and as the final resting place of Johannes Vermeer.
Delftware Factories & Shops – Delft is world-famous for its Delft Blue pottery, a distinct blue-and-white ceramic style inspired by Chinese porcelain. Visitors can tour traditional factories such as Royal Delft to see how these ceramics are crafted.
Vermeer Centrum – A museum dedicated to Johannes Vermeer, the famous Dutch painter of “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” It offers insights into his life, techniques, and masterpieces.
Prinsenhof Museum – Once the residence of William of Orange, now a museum showcasing Dutch history, art, and the struggle for independence.
Canals & Bridges – Delft’s charming canals, arched bridges, and cobbled streets create a fairytale, like atmosphere, perfect for walking or boat tours.
Best Time to Visit
Delft can be visited year-round, but spring and summer (April–September) offer the best weather for exploring its historic streets and outdoor attractions.
